Staff Biography

Gloria Wai, Born in 1990 in Winnipeg (Canada), began studying the piano with great passion at the age of four.  Gloria received her earlier training from Professor Charles Horton who was a frequent performer in Canada and United States.  He is also the co-author, with University of Manitoba colleague the late Lawrence Ritchey, of a music theory textbook and accompanying workbook, published in 2000 by Scarecrow Press.

In 2008 Gloria received a scholarship in music and was admitted to the University of Manitoba where she studied for 4 years.  She kept studying with Prof. Horton for the first 2 years, followed by studying with 2 more professors in the next 2 years who were Dr. Judy Kehler Siebert and Dr. David Moroz.  Both professors are the most versatile artists in Canada who have performed in every major Canadian city as a soloist and a collaborative artist and appear regularly in recitals with Canada’s most distinguished musicians.  Gloria was having lessons with all 3 professors regularly in the last 2 years of the Bachelor degree.

Apart from the regular lessons, Gloria attended her weekly master classes with different performers such as Dr. Edmund Dawe (Dean of University of Manitoba) and Dr. Oleg Pokhanovski (well-known violinist and pianist among the Western countries).  Moreover, Gloria actively performed chamber music with different singers and instrumentalists throughout the school years including her 2 graduate solo recitals.  She was also appointed as the pianist of the University of Manitoba Women’s Chorus and the University of Manitoba Orchestra.

Gloria was a frequent prizewinner in the Winnipeg Music Festival.  In spite of numerous scholarships, she participated in different competitions including being awarded 1st runner-up in the Music Scholarship Series of Manitoba Registered Music Teachers’ Association – Provincial Senior Level, one of the most well-known competitions in the province in 2009.  Gloria decided to get onto the teaching path after she graduated and spent a year being a piano teacher in Canada.  Now she decided to go back to Hong Kong and starts her new music career here.

Gloria is currently enrolled in the Master of Arts (Music) in the Chinese University of Hong Kong and is also studying privately with Mr. Raymond Young who is one of Hong Kong’s most versatile and renowned pianists.
