Staff Biography

Phoebe Cheng Hiu Man, received her Bachelor of Music (Hons.) degree from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2015 under the tutelage of Ms Feng Rong. She began the double bass training at the age of 10. Later, she was admitted by the Junior Programme of HKAPA and studied with Ms Olive Chan. She is currently working in the Hong Kong Sinfonietta. During her studies, she was awarded numerous scholarships including Chan Ho Choi Memorial Scholarship and Spring-Time Stage Production scholarship. She has also participated in masterclasses and been coached by many world-renowned bassists, including Thomas Martin (Former Bass Princiapl of London Symphony Orchestra), Prof. Janne Saksala (1st Bass Principal of Berlin Philharmonic) , Christoph Wimmer (Principal Bass of Vienna Philharmonic), Joel Quarrington (Principal Bass of London Symphony Orchestra), Prof. Catalin Rotaru(renowned double bass soloist and Professor of Arizona State University) and Prof. Daxun Zhang(renowned soloist and Associate Professor of Double Bass at the University of Texas at Austin).

 

As an active orchestral player, Phoebe has taken part in many orchestras and several festivals, comprehending the Japan International Contrabass Festival, International Orchestra Institute Attergau by Vienna Philharmonic, Tongyeong International Music Festival in Korea. During the summer of 2012, she has joined the Dutch Orchestra and Ensemble Academy and toured several cities in Netherlands. Apart from that, Phoebe has been chosen as one of the bassists, to work with Hong Kong Philharmonic in the ‘Side by Side project’ in March 2013 and November 2014. Additionally, she has performed as principal in Academy Symphony Orchestra of HKAPA and Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra.
