Staff Biography
Barry Chan, born in 1991, is an experienced double bass tutor and performer based in Hong Kong. He began his music journey at the age of 10, studying double bass with Mr. Edmond Cheng and attaining ATCL with distinction from The Trinity Guildhall London. Later on, Barry continued his study with Mr. Eddie Zong and completed the Bachelor Degree in Music with First Class Honours in The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2013.
Barry served as a miscellaneous musician with many major orchestras in Hong Kong, including the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Sinfonietta, City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Virtuosi Orchestra and the Asian Youth Orchestra. He had also participated in concert tours with various orchestras, traveling around the world - Japan, Taiwan, Korea, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam in Asia; New York, Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal in North America; Finland, Norway, Czech Republic, Vienna in Europe and Sydney, Melbourne in Australia. In addition, Barry was invited to take part in many state productions, such as I Pagliacci, Cavalleria Rusticana, Rigoletto, The NutCracker and The Phantom of the Opera.
Barry joined numerous master classes of Professor Christoph Wimmer, Joel Quarrington, Miloslav Jelinek, Goffried Engles, and DaXun Zhang, showing his devotion in playing double bass. Other than academic studies and performances, Barry is also experienced and active in the music-education field. He is now teaching in Ho Tung Secondary School, HKAPA Junior Department and the Youth Symphony Orchestra of Macau.
